We all wear masks. Whether to fit in, avoid judgment, or protect ourselves from stigma, masking is a common but often hidden part of our daily lives. This course, offered as part of Mental Health Week, explores the concept of masking and how it applies when we suppress our emotions, personality traits, behaviours, or symptoms to meet societal expectations. Through engaging discussions and interactive activities, participants will uncover the reasons why we mask and its impact on our mental well-being. We will examine how stigma contributes to the need to mask and how unmasking – when safe to do so- can foster deeper connections, boost self-esteem, and support overall mental health.

A key component of this course is a creative exercise where participants will design a mask that represents what they show to the world, then symbolically “remove” it to reveal their authentic selves. This powerful activity encourages self-reflection and dialogue on the importance of acceptance and vulnerability. Let’s unmask mental health together – because there is no “normal,” and everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.
