Course Purpose

This one day online workshop will provide information to support workplaces in becoming psychologically healthy and safe.

There are many types of hazards in workplaces which can cause harm; physical hazards such as slippery floors, unguarded dangerous machines, noise and fire; chemical hazards such as gases, dusts, fumes liquids and vapours; ergonomic hazards such as repetitive lifting and workstation design; and biological hazards such as bacteria, parasites, insect bites.

This workshop is about another type of hazard – psychological hazards – which are factors under the control and influence of the workplace that can cause psychological harm. We will teach you what we can do to manage these hazards so our workplaces are healthy and safe.

Psychological health and safety is not about treating or diagnosing workers, or about worker mental illness. Rather, it is about broadening the health and safety lens to include psychological considerations and focusing on those aspects of the workplace that can support psychologically positive workplaces, or alternately, can cause psychological harm.

Participants will learn about what a psychologically healthy and safe workplace is. They will hear about the CSA Group’s National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (the Standard), a tool they can use to help guide them on this path. Participants will enhance their awareness of workplace mental health concerns, identify common psychological hazards and learn how to roll psychological considerations into existing health and safety programs.

While the workshop touches on several important topics related to workplace psychological health and safety, it is not specific to mental health awareness, mental health first aid, the worker’s compensation system, disability management, harassment and violence prevention or critical incident stress management. Additional training on these related topics can be accessed through a number of community and public agencies as well as private consulting service providers.
