Manitoba Teacher raises awareness and funds for suicide prevention and mental health

Winnipeg, MB – July 8, 2025 – CMHA Manitoba and Winnipeg is grateful to be a partner in Diane’s Run Across Manitoba, a third-party fundraiser supporting CMHA branches across the province. To mark her 50th birthday, Diane Wing will run 50 kilometres each day for 10 days, starting July 9, 2025.

Wing is a Grade 1 teacher in Portage la Prairie, a mother of two and a grandmother of two. She began running in 2014 to support her mental wellness following the loss of her husband Kelly, who died by suicide in 2012. Her first race was in his memory. Wing uses running as a way to maintain her well-being and advocate for mental health.

“I see this as a privilege some don’t get. In recognition of this milestone, I am going to attempt to run across Manitoba,” said Wing. “I love the idea of ‘improve yourself so you can improve the world,’ so that is my goal here.”

To date, Wing has run at least four full marathons, 34 half-marathons, three ultras and one mini-triathlon. Her run stands as a testament to resilience, hope, and the power of community in addressing mental health challenges.

“Although there is a lot more awareness today, I feel like there is still a long way to go with education and resources for those impacted by mental illness,” said Wing. “People, especially men, are still afraid to seek help from others because of the stigma attached to mental illness.”

Wing is encouraging others to show compassion and support for all those experiencing mental illness.

CMHA applauds Wing’s efforts and invites the community to help reach her $10,000 fundraising goal. Donations can be made online at www.cmhaacrossmb.ca/donate/#donate_form, select the Diane Wing – Run Across Manitoba – 50th Birthday option.
